Our club was featured this week (May 26, 2009) on Jeff Burzacott's Sports Show on 5AA Adelaide Radio. Myk Aussie was a guest on the program and discussed the first women's games in Edmonton and the rapid growth of our women's footy club in Calgary.

Our club has received a small mention in a November edition of Western Australia's South Western Times. The article features our umpire friend Shane Atherton and reports on his trip to the US Nationals tournament in Colorado Springs. Through Shane's role as a football development manager for the South West Football League, we hope to strengthen our club's links with the Australian football community. Well done Shane!

The Kookaburras' profile in south-west Victoria is growing, with an October 17th article in the Warrnambool Standard covering our US Nationals victory over the Atlanta Lady Kookaburras. As a point of interest, three Calgary footballers have roots in that region of Australia - Claire Brown and Jake Anson of the Kookaburras and Matt Bell of the Calgary Bears.

Warrnambool has a growing association with international Aussie Rules, having hosted the 2008 International Cup, where the Canada Northwind placed 6th. Thank-you to Bruce Anson for sending through the article.

Our resident muscle-bound Kookaburra, Debbie Leung, was featured last week on the front page of the Edmonton Sun. The newspaper interviewed Debbie about her fitness regime and about activities that she does to keep in shape. Her reply? Kicking around a sherrin with the Kookaburras!

How did you get involved in Aussie Rules football?
I lived in Perth while growing up and had always watched it on TV. I heard that Calgary had a team - the Calgary Kookaburras - last summer, so decided to give playing a go. Any girls who want to come and try it out can look us up on our website.

What's the difference between Aussie rules football and rugby?
There is no offside in Australian football. The game is faster and played end to end, much like hockey. Tackling is less physical and games are higher scoring.

How does women's football differ from the male version?
Women play by all the same rules as the men, although the ball used is slightly smaller.

The sport is notoriously violent. How violent is your league?
It's not as physical as rugby or hockey. We play without pads, but most game rules are designed to protect the player with the ball. We're very conscious of avoiding injuries.

What's the worst injury you've ever sustained playing the game?
I haven't sustained any serious injuries, just general bumps and bruises.

What's the worst injury you've ever given?
I don't think I have given any injuries that I am aware of.

What is your favourite Paul Hogan movie?
Paul Hogan is Crocodile Dundee. The original Crocodile Dundee was a classic.

The Warrnambool Standard

A Warrnambool man played a central role in a historic international Australian Rules Football match at the weekend. The Canadian and United States' national female teams met in their first ever Test match in Vancouver on Saturday.

Coaching the Canadian outfit was 25-year-old Jake Anson, who is spreading his passion for the game to different corners of the globe.

The former Merrivale junior is honing his own game in Calgary, Alberta, while coaching the women's competition and helping develop the city's juniors.

His rise to international football coach seems a natural progression for a man who has played a part in taking the game to the world. Mr. Anson is one of World Footy News' inaugural writers, contributing to the online site since 2004.

So when he took off to travel in 2005, some work with AFL South Africa seemed a great way to interact with locals and get off the beaten tourist path. Mr. Anson took four clinics outside cities in the North West Province during his stay in the country.

Saturday's international - two halves of 20 minutes - was to be followed by a four quarter match yesterday. No results were available last night.
